URI oceanography school redesigns website to include underwater sound

NARRAGANSETT – A redesigned website assembled by the University of Rhode Island’s Graduate School of Oceanography is introducing teachers, students and the public to the sounds of the seas.
The site will be presented to the international marine acoustics community at a conference in Ireland later this month by project director Gail Scowcroft and her colleague Kathleen Vigness-Raposa, a marine biologist at Marine Acoustics Inc. in Middletown.
URI said the Discovery of Sound in the Sea, www.dosits.org, is the most comprehensive website on underwater sound. It provides an interactive audio gallery of sound recordings from more than 70 marine mammals, fish and invertebrates, as well as other natural sounds and man-made underwater sounds such as ships, air guns and sonar. It also includes information about the science of underwater sound. •
