SOUTH KINGSTOWN – The University of Rhode Island will welcome 3,250 first-year students for fall semester 2017, the university announced Tuesday. The university announced students will begin to move in on Saturday, Sept. 2 and classes for the semester begin on Wednesday, Sept. 6.
After Rhode Island, the top states represented in the incoming freshman class were Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York and New Jersey.

URI announced 23 percent of the incoming class identifies as a student of color, a 6.9 percentage-point increase since 2010.
The university’s faculty has also increased its diversity, by 2.6 percentage points since 2010 to 18.6 percent of its staff.
The school also expects approximately 500 transfer students to join the student body this year, which it accepted from nearly 1,400 transfer applications.
This year the school received a record 22,656 applicants for incoming freshman positions. The incoming class has an average grade point average of 3.54 and an average SAT score of 1180.
URI will award over $92 million in undergraduate aid and scholarships this semester. Seventy-five percent of undergraduates are expected to receive financial aid and institutional support.
URI also reminded this semester will be the inaugural semester for the university’s College of Nursing at the Rhode Island Nursing Education Center in Providence.
The university will also celebrate its 125th anniversary with a number of events this year, including WaterFire Providence, concerts and a sky-gazing event.
The school announced the introduction of two new interdisciplinary majors to the curriculum this year, a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice and a Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems.
Tuition and fees for URI for the 2017-18 academic year are $13,792 for in-state undergraduate students, $30,042 for out-of-state undergraduate students and $22,794 for regional undergraduate students. Undergraduate room and board will cost $12,452.
