URI’s Greek community supports UCAP program

Members of the University of Rhode Island’s Greek community recently donated $10,500 to the Urban Collaborative Accelerated Program (UCAP). The funds were raised during the URI Greek-community-sponsored “Philanthropy Week” and will be used for educational initiatives at the UCAP.
URI’s Greek community became aware of the nonprofit organization and a public school from the movie “Accelerating America.” The documentary, directed by Tim Hotchner, follows three UCAP students as they progress through the educational program. The film won a grand prize at the 2008 Rhode Island International Film Festival and a special jury award from the 2008 Seattle International Film Festival.
“We chose UCAP because we felt that everybody should have an opportunity to go to college. The donation was a way for Greeks to honor the value of education,” said Lauren DiStefano, who oversees the PanHellenic Council’s philanthropy.
The University of Rhode Island’s Greek community includes 12 fraternities and 10 sororities. As part of their fundraising initiatives, they held their own “So You Think You Can Dance?” event, and invited students from the UCAP to perform. &#8226
