PROVIDENCE – A 5.9 magnitude earthquake hit 41 miles northwest of Richmond, Va., and was felt in Rhode Island.
Tremors were felt at the Providence Business News offices at 220 West Exchange St. and the Statehouse was evacuated.
New York City and Washington buildings shook, Bloomberg News reported. The quake was also felt in areas including Boston, Connecticut, New Jersey and Toronto.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake struck at 1:51 p.m. local time. The preliminary finding had the magnitude at 5.8.
