PROVIDENCE – Verizon Wireless has boosted its cell phone network in and around the Brown University campus.

Verizon recently activated a new cell site in response to increased demand for voice and data services in the area, the company said.

David Thomson, a Verizon spokesman, said the new cell site is located on Angell Street and will boost signals on the Brown campus, as well as in the neighborhood surrounding the school.

“We have always believed that even the most advanced cell phone is only as good as the network it runs on,” said Richard Enright, Verizon’s director for network systems performance. “We continue to aggressively invest into our wireless networks across New England to increase coverage and capacity for our customers.”

Verizon is set to face new competition for local cell-phone customers later this year with the expected debut of Cox Communications’ new wireless service.
