PROVIDENCE – The Verizon Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Verizon Communications, said that it donated nearly $600,000 to Rhode Island nonprofit groups in 2008.
In a news release, the foundation said that its donations helped enable “organizations to improve literacy skills, create new and diverse approaches to technology-based education and help domestic violence victims rebuild their lives.”
The foundation also said that Verizon employees and retirees also volunteered more than 4,200 hours of personal time to assist nonprofit organizations throughout the state.
Recipients of grants in Rhode Island include: Women’s Fund of Rhode Island, Violence Technology Solutions/Social Change Request For Proposals, Crossroads Rhode Island, Day One, Dorcas Place, Junior Achievement and The Apeiron Institute. •
