Voters recall Providence City Councilman Kevin Jackson

PROVIDENCE – City Councilor Kevin Jackson was ousted in a recall election held Tuesday, according to unofficial results from the mayor’s office.

The vote was 1,813-160.

Emily Crowell, a spokeswoman for Mayor Jorge O. Elorza, said the votes need to be certified by the Board of Canvassers.

Jackson, who represented Ward 3, held on to his seat despite his arrest last May.

Jackson was charged in connection with allegedly misappropriating $12,000 in campaign contributions and embezzling $127,000 from the Providence Cobras, a youth track and field organization that he founded. He was indicted in July, and has denied the charges.

Jackson, a Democrat, has represented Ward 3 since 1995. A group of more than 2,300 voters in his neighborhood signed a recall petition after his arrest and indictment.
