Use: Middle and upper school students at Moses Brown School have a fresh study space this spring, as Shawmut Design and Construction recently completed a redesign of the school’s historic Walter Jones Library. The library, originally built as a gymnasium in 1904 and converted to a library in the 1980s, has been brought to modernity with its recent redesign by DBVW Architects. The design of the 11,000-square-foot space is centered around community research and instruction, with an open-learning commons on the main level featuring work areas, book stacks and a classroom for up to 20 students. The mezzanine level, which previously housed the lower-school library, now boasts three team lab workspaces for groups of six to eight students. Previously not accessible by students, the lower level once used for storage has been transformed into an archive room with restroom access. The building’s exterior has undergone minor restorations and the addition of a glass bridge connecting the library to the Woodman Family Community & Performance Center. With the addition of an elevator, both buildings are now handicap-accessible.
