WESTERLY – Westerly Community Credit Union is going mobile.
The credit union’s members will now be able to use their mobile phones to check account balances, pay their bills and transfer money, WCCU said last week.
“‘We are excited to be leading our local industry with this new initiative,” said Meg Sisco, vice president of marketing at WCCU. “Being able to offer our members access to their accounts 24-7 via their cell phone just enhances the additions in technology we have adopted in the last few years. Our goal is to be easily accessible to our members when they need it – anytime, anywhere.”
While mobile features are commonplace in the banking sector, many credit unions – particularly smaller community institutions – have been slower to adopt them.
Over the last few years, WCCU said it has added certain online capabilities such as online mortgage and loan applications with an answer in minutes, the ability to open accounts online and free bill paying.
The mobile service is accessible to members who have mobile Internet access on networks such as Verizon, Sprint-Nextel, Cingular, Virgin Mobile and T-Mobile.
To activate the mobile capability, members register through WCCU’s online banking service at www.westerlyccu.com.
Westerly Community Credit Union, founded in 1948 by 23 initial members, has grown into a $193 million financial institution with more than 15,000 members. It has two branches in Westerly, one in Richmond and a fourth branch, in South Kingstown.
