PROVIDENCE – U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., is among a group of federal lawmakers who have drafted a resolution designating November as Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month.
Whitehouse collaborated on the effort with U.S. Reps. André Carson, D-Ind., and Anna Eshoo, D-Calif.

Last year, Whitehouse helped to establish a federal research program that aims to find a cure for pancreatic cancer.
“I’m proud to … recognize the Rhode Islanders battling this heartbreaking disease,” Whitehouse said. “This November, I hope people across the country will join the fight to find a cure for pancreatic cancer.”
The federal resolution highlights “the importance of increasing funding for pancreatic cancer research at the Department of Defense and the National Institutes of Health, and of reducing the disease’s outsized effect on communities of color,” a release from Whitehouse’s office reads.
The disease has recently been in the national spotlight after claiming the lives of Democratic U.S. Rep. John Lewis of Georgia and Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
According to Whitehouse’s office, about 57,000 people in the United States will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer this year.
