PROVIDENCE – Work to demolish the old Interstate 195 overpass over Wickenden Street largely finished this week, the R.I. Department of Transportation said.
Workers removed the bridge in the eastern half of Providence as part of the Interstate 195 relocation project. DOT spokesman Charles St. Martin said the demolition – part of the so-called I-Way project – took longer than expected because of the bitter cold that affected construction equipment. Workers also needed more time than anticipated to sort the debris.
St. Martin said the DOT plans to sell the recovered steel as scrap and recycle the asphalt and concrete for use on other parts of the I-Way project.
Workers will come back to the area in late March or April to finish any remaining work and start to move the I-195 Exit 2 ramp, which will eventually terminate at Wickenden Street.
