Woonsocket nonprofit a ‘Champion’

PROVIDENCE – Citizens Bank and WJAR-TV NBC10 have named Connecting Children and Families in Woonsocket as the 2010 second quarter Champion in Action in the family support category.
As part of the award, Connecting Children and Families will receive a $25,000 grant and promotional and volunteer support from Citizens and NBC10 employees.
In announcing the honor, Citizens noted that the nonprofit will use the grant “to fund community programs, health initiatives and social services to help families seeking support for food, clothing and utility assistance.”
Connecting Children and Families provides services through its Parents As Teachers Program. It also offers volunteer income-tax assistance for low-income families, and financial literacy training and coaching.
Champions in Action is a joint initiative of Citizens Bank and NBC10, launched nine years ago to recognize and support nonprofit organizations for their contributions to Rhode Island communities. A new Champion in Action is selected each quarter among a range of social services.
A winner for the third-quarter 2010 Champion in Action award, in the environmental impact category, will be announced in July. Applications for all remaining 2010 topics can be obtained online at www.citizensbank.com/community.
