DLT: R.I. recovered 58% of jobs lost since recession

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island has recovered 58 percent of the 39,800 jobs lost during the recession as of February, according to information released this week from the R.I. Department of Labor and Training.

Rhode Island’s peak employment level was in December 2006 with 495,700 jobs, while its low was in August 2009 with 455,900 jobs, the DLT said.

Rhode Island was only ahead of Maine in terms of jobs recovered among the New England states. Maine has recovered 44.3 percent of the 30,700 jobs lost during the recession. Massachusetts and Vermont have already recovered all of the employment lost during their respective recessions, the DLT said.

New Hampshire has regained nearly 97 percent of its 30,300 jobs lost, and Connecticut has recovered nearly 74 percent of its 119,000 jobs lost, the DLT said.

The United States has recovered all of the 8.7 million jobs lost between January 2008 and February 2010, the high and low employment levels, the DLT said.

Meanwhile, the February labor force rose 1.2 percent year over year in New England, whole rising 0.8 percent nationwide. Massachusetts reported an over the year gain of 2.1 percent in its labor force; Connecticut (1.7 percent); and New Hampshire (0.2 percent). Maine, Rhode Island and Vermont experienced drops in their labor forces from the previous year period at 1.8 percent, 1 percent and 0.2 percent, respectively.
