PROVIDENCE – Johnson & Wales University’s Ray McCue, an assistant professor, has been named best culinary educator in the Northeast.
The designation comes from the American Culinary Federation, an association offering educational resources, training, apprenticeship and programmatic accreditation in the culinary arts.
Established in 1998, the award honors an educator whose knowledge, skills and expertise enhance the image of the professional chef. Also considered is the example he or she sets in guiding students seeking a career in the culinary profession.
McCue, who lives in Cranston, served as the JWU student team coach when the team won the 2014 ACF Northeast Region Student Team Championship.
He received the award, dubbed “ACF Northeast Region Chef Educator of the Year,” at a ceremony held Feb. 15-17 at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront.
“Every day I do my best to inspire students to go above and beyond in not only cooking, but also in their lives and their community,” McCue said in a press release from the American Culinary Federation. “As a culinary educator, I believe that you can never tell where a teacher’s influence stops. I’m glad to have had such great teachers in my life and to have the opportunity to pass along their lessons.”
An assistant professor at JWU since 2007, McCue received his master’s in education, teaching and learning at JWU in 2009. He has been a banquet chef at the Ritz-Carlton New York and a chef tournant, or swing cook, at 2West Restaurant. Both establishments are in New York City.
As a regional winner, McCue is a candidate for the national award, which will be announced at a convention in Orlando, Fla., July 30 to Aug. 3.

  1. Well deserved Chef! As the article mentions, Chef McCue goes above and beyond teaching culinary skills by teaching life skills. Definitely one of my most influential figures at JWU.
