NORTH KINGSTOWN – Two urban projects, Callaghan Gardens in Pawtucket and the Parkis North Elmwood Revitalization Project in Providence, received “green” awards yesterday at the R.I. Department of Health’s 2008 Healthy Housing Conference, held at Quidnessett Country Club.
The awards – a partnership between the Health and Rhode Island Housing – touted the developments’ techniques in creating “safe, healthy homes Rhode Islanders can afford.”

“There is no doubt that healthy housing promotes well being and positive health outcomes,” Dr. David R. Gifford, the state director of health, said in a statement. “We support these green building efforts and hope to see more of them through the state in the near future.”
The Parkis North Elmwood Revitalization Project is a redevelopment of three historic houses in South Providence. The project was completed by GENS, along with Donald Powers Architects Inc.
During the renovations, all lead, asbestos and hazardous materials were abated; old building materials were salvaged or recycled; and energy-efficient heating systems were installed, according to Rhode Island Housing.
Callaghan Gardens is a $4 million, 14-condominium affordable-housing complex on Barton Street in Pawtucket. The project was completed in November, by the Pawtucket Citizens Development Corporation, and designed by Ed Wojcik Architect Ltd.
The townhouse-style development was honored for its energy-efficient lighting and appliances; green-label certified flooring, which includes bamboo hardwoods; and permeable paving that allows water through.
