PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island ranked No. 1 in the nation for average broadband download speeds, according to a report by Cable.co.uk, a broadband comparison and news site.
Rhode Island broadband download speeds averaged 36.69 megabits per second, meaning that a high-definition movie could be downloaded in approximately 28 minutes.

The data was compiled by a company called Measurement Lab, or M-Lab, and analyzed by Cable.co.uk.
Washington state ranked No. 2 in the study, with an average download speed of 34.25 megabits per second, followed by Massachusetts at No. 3 at 34.06 megabits per second.
Following Rhode Island and Massachusetts in New England were Connecticut (No. 11), New Hampshire (No. 18), Vermont (No. 32) and Maine (No. 50). Montana ranked last at No. 51 with a download speed of 10.94 megabits per second.
“The quality and adoption of broadband internet services varies substantially across the United States. Urban areas, particularly on the coasts, have exceptional access compared to the Midwest and rural areas, reflecting social, geographic and economic divides,” said Colin Anderson, an independent researcher at M-Lab, in a release.
M-Lab obtained the data by performing 42 million internet speed tests around the nation from May 2016 to May 2017.
