At Amica Mutual Insurance Co., health isn’t just about the body, it involves an integrative approach to the employee. There is a culture of wellness woven into the fabric of the company, beginning over 50 years ago with a staff nurse who performed blood pressure screenings.
Now Amica provides a diabetes incentive program, walking paths, an on-site fitness center and a basketball court, health coaching and free fruit on Mondays, among other wellness amenities. Amica considers wellness programming a “sort of value-return,” said senior wellness coordinator Jean Tapley.

“We wouldn’t win customer service awards if our employees were not happy and healthy,” Tapley said.
Tapley also speaks of creating a mindfulness series at Amica, where she hopes to help people cope with stress.
“We’re really trying to see [wellness] as a holistic approach to our employees,” she said. n
