PROVIDENCE – Gov. Daniel J. McKee on Wednesday selected Lt. Col. Darnell S. Weaver of the R.I. State Police as the first person of color to lead the state police force.
Weaver succeeds Col. James Manni, who will retire April 29 to become town manager in his hometown of South Kingstown on May 2.

Weaver, a Cranston native, is a 28-year veteran of the R.I. State Police. He is currently the deputy superintendent and chief of field operations, overseeing the patrol bureau, detective bureau, division specialty units, administrative bureau, and the R.I. Department of Public Safety.
Weaver served in the U.S. Marine Corps before joining the R.I. State Police.
Weaver will be sworn in as the state police force’s 15th superintendent April 29.
