SOUTH KINGSTOWN – The University of Rhode Island became the beneficiary of a six-figure grant to help support inclusivity in science education.
The university announced Monday that it received a $500,000 Howard Hughes Medical Institute grant as part of the institute’s Inclusive Excellence 3 Learning Community initiative to advance diversity and inclusivity in academic science. URI is one of approximately 100 institutions to receive funding from the Hughes Medical Institute for this program, the university said.

As part of this program, URI is part of a 15-institution learning community collaborative that will focus on meaningful evaluation of effective and inclusive teaching to see how such practices can be improved to further diversity, equity and inclusion. Other schools involved in the collaborative are University of Maryland, Tuskegee University and the University of Pennsylvania, URI said.
“Our hope is to build practices into our teaching where we are listening to student voices and to identify points along the way where we may be losing students and what we can do to help smooth that transition,” said Becky Sartini, associate dean of academic programs for URI’s College of the Environment and Life Sciences, in a statement. “At the same time, we want to be able to better evaluate where we are, recognize where we are succeeding and incorporate ways for faculty to demonstrate and build on that success.”
