PROVIDENCE – Legislation introduced in the state Senate looks to “place Rhode Island on a greener path” by creating an advisory board tasked with developing the Rhode Island Greenhouse Action Plan.
The action plan would identify ways to reduce greenhouse emission levels by set deadlines in 2015, 2020 and 2050. The legislation, submitted by Sen. William A. Walaska, D-Warwick, also instructs the R.I. Department of Environmental Management to work with other states, researchers and experts to implement methods to reduce greenhouse gases. DEM would be required to annually report the level of greenhouse emissions each year.
The legislation would also create an independent board that will review the reports and conclusions published by DEM and other state agencies. Its main task would be to evaluate the action plan’s proposals, making sure they are reasonable.
The Walaska bill has been referred to the Senate Committee on Environment and Agriculture. •
