Gov. Deval Patrick broaches veto of casino bill critical to Fall River proposal

PROVIDENCE – Mass. Gov. Deval Patrick Thursday threw up a potential roadblock to a casino in Fall River by broaching the idea of vetoing necessary legislation.
The Lowell Sun reported Friday that the Democrat hinted at the possibility during a conference call with reporters. The newspaper reported that Patrick cautioned lawmakers to pass onto him a bill he could support or approve the bill with a veto-proof margin. But the governor specifically said he was not issuing a direct threat because the final legislation is not far enough along in the process.
After each passing a version, the Senate and House have been trying for more than two weeks to settle on a compromise bill that would allow casino gambling in the Bay State.
In May, the Mashpee Wampanoags struck a deal with the Fall River Redevelopment Authority to purchase land there for $21 million with the intent to build a casino but have been waiting for legislation before moving ahead with the plan.
