BRISTOL – Shawmut Design and Construction last week broke ground on a 52,000-square-foot building at the heart of Roger Williams University’s main campus.

It will be home to the communications, foreign languages and humanities departments, housing a student newsroom, multimedia production studio, language and graphic design labs and classroom space “that reflects regional heritages,” the university said.
Construction is slated for completion next June. Once work is complete, the developers hope the building will be awarded a Silver-level certification from the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program.
“When this facility opens in the fall of 2009, it will undoubtedly stand as the centerpiece building on our waterfront campus,” RWU President Roy J. Nirschel said in a statement. “Shawmut brings to the project a strong track record and a solid reputation – we’re happy to partner with them on such a major endeavor.”
Roger Williams University, ranked by U.S. News & World Report as 9th among comprehensive colleges in the North, is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.
