PROVIDENCE – The Miriam Hospital has honored accountant Alan M. Gilstein as its 2007 Person of the Year.
Gilstein – a principal in the accounting firm of Piccerelli, Gilstein & Co. LLP – has been associated with the hospital since 1976, when he joined Miriam’s finance committee. Since then, he has served on nearly every hospital committee. Named to the Miriam board of trustees in 1978, he went on to serve as vice chairman, treasurer and, for four years, board chairman.
Today, Gilstein continues his affiliation with the hospital, serving as chairman of The Miriam Hospital Foundation, a post he has held since 2005. He also is a founding member of the Lifespan health care network’s board of directors, and a member of the Lifespan investment committee.
“Through his many leadership roles and long-standing relationship with the hospital, Alan’s vision and leadership has been exceptional,” Dr. Kathleen C. Hittner, the hospital’s president and CEO, said in a statement today. “I am grateful for the time, effort and enthusiasm he continues to provide and am delighted to recognize him as The 2007 Miriam Person of the Year.”
Gilstein was presented with the award during the hospital’s annual meeting Sept. 18 at the Ledgemont Country Club in Seekonk. “Anyone listening to the well-deserved accolades … quickly came to the realization that Alan has not only made a significant contribution to Miriam’s development and success, but also has improved the quality of health care in Rhode Island,” his firm said in the current issue of its quarterly newsletter Disclosure.
Also during that meeting, he and his wife, Suzanne Gilstein, announced the establishment of The Alan and Suzanne Gilstein Annual Nursing Symposium Endowed Fund, promoting excellence in nursing care through continuing education. The free symposium will bring national nursing and clinical experts to The Miriam Hospital each year for a day of scholarly work.
