RIC has new system for emergency notifications

PROVIDENCE – There’s something new on the Rhode Island College campus that officials hope they’ll never have to use: an emergency notification system to alert students, faculty and staff of a crisis by e-mail or text message.

The system is a new feature offered by Apogee Telecommunications. In the event of an emergency, authorized campus administrators can use a secure Web interface to send out an alert both as an e-mail and as a text message to cell phones or personal digital assistants.

“People are very mobile these days; it’s the best way to communicate quickly. Cell phones and text messaging methods are the most favorable,” said Richard Prull, assistant vice president for information services at RIC. Prull said text messaging is particularly useful to contact commuters before they arrive on campus, if necessary.

The implementation of the new system comes in part as a result of the Virginia Tech campus shooting in April that left 32 students and faculty dead.
