NEW YORK – The Everett Dance Theatre of Providence is among 60 artists and ensembles nationwide honored this week with $1 million in total grants from the Multi-Arts Production Fund.
Everett Dance received $18,000 to support its production of Aaron Jungels’ “Silas the Teenager,” a multi-media piece that uses video, text, movement and kinetic sculptural sets to explore autism in teens. The work was inspired by Jungels’ nephew Silas, a 15-year-old with autism. “In this theatrical exploration of Silas’s autism, stories, images, humor, and metaphors invite the audience to engage with a condition that can seem distancing, baffling and off-putting,” the dance troupe said in a statement. “Silas likes to tease and spar with his uncle, and capture his obsessions in video …. Along with his parents and teachers, he faces a range of challenges, particularly as he continues to grow in size and make the difficult transition into adulthood.”

The other grants, to organizations in 11 states, ranged from $14,000 to $45,000.
The MAP Fund, established by the Rockefeller Foundation in 1989, is now an affiliate of the New York-based Creative Capital Fund, an arts advocacy nonprofit. Over the past 18 years, MAP has supported more than 650 projects with grants totaling $17 million.
