Memorial Hospital hosts new incontinence program

PAWTUCKET – Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island last month launched a new program to help women deal with urinary incontinence, using fiber-optic technology to diagnose the cause.

“Loss of bladder control need not be reason for embarrassment and, indeed, can be treated successfully,” said Dr. Michael Pepi, Memorial Hospital’s obstetrician/gynecologist-in-chief and an assistant professor at Brown University’s Warren Alpert School of Medicine.

Pepi and Doctors David Harrington and John Morton, of Women’s HealthCare Specialists in Pawtucket, recently acquired the fiber-optic equipment. Pepi said the technology will allow women to be tested and treated – medically or surgically – close to home by their regular doctor.

In the past, incontinence was treated primarily by specialists.
