PORTSMOUTH – A2B Tracking Solutions held a 50th anniversary celebration earlier this month for the bar code.
A2B Chairman David Collins headed the team of engineers who developed the bar code technology which was first used on railcars.
Fifty years later, there are around three billion bar code scans per day, A2B said.
Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee, U.S. David N. Cicilline and Sens. Sheldon Whitehouse and Jack Reed attended the anniversary party, where Cicilline announced a congressional citation naming Collins “father of the bar code industry.”
A2B provides item unique identification technology and services for the U.S. Department of Defense. The company more than doubled its employee count in the past year and plans to continue hiring in 2011.
