PORTSMOUTH – A2B Tracking Solutions Inc. has won a U.S. Air Force contract worth more than $20 million and will nearly double its staff to handle the order, the state’s congressional delegation said in a joint statement released Monday.

A2B will support the Air Force Item Unique Identification Part Marking Program by marking items with specialized data matrix bar codes at 221 Air Force bases across the globe. Once the project is complete, the U.S. Department of Defense will be able to track the items, helping to improve the efficiency of defense operations.

The contract is the follow-up to the company’s 2008 contract with the Air Force for $70 million to create the UID bar codes.

U.S. Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I., a West Point graduate who serves on the Armed Services and Appropriations committees, said, “A2B was awarded this competitive federal contract because its tracking services will help the military save time and the taxpayers save money.”

“First and foremost UID enables our troops in the field to have quick access to good equipment, when and where they need it,” said Peter Collins, president of A2B. “It is a pleasure to be working alongside those in Congress and the Pentagon who recognize the efficiencies available through technology.”

In order complete the contract, A2B announced plans to hire 25 people in the next six to 12 months. The company currently employs 22 people at its Portsmouth facility plus roughly six others across the country.

A2B Tracking Solutions is a provider of bar code tracking solutions, and has held various contracts with the U.S. Marine Corps, Army, Navy and defense contractors. Prior to winning this most recent contract, the company was already providing small-scale marking services to the Air Force.
