PROVIDENCE – Retail gasoline prices in Rhode Island have declined for the fifth straight week, to levels five cents below last week’s prices and 19 cents less than a month ago, according to AAA Southern New England.
In its Aug. 20 survey, AAA reported an average price of $2.769 per gallon for regular, unleaded, self-serve gas, a drop of 5 cents from last week’s price of $2.819 per gallon. A year ago, the local average was $3.049 per gallon.

Nationwide, the average price for self-serve regular was $2.769, the same as the local average.
The latest AAA survey of Rhode Island gas stations found self-serve prices for unleaded regular ranged from a low of $2.699 to a high of $2.909 per gallon, a spread of 24 cents per gallon. The nonprofit auto club found an even wider ranges for other grades of fuel.
Average self-serve prices in Rhode Island this week were $3.289 per gallon for diesel, $3.159 for mid-grade unleaded and $3.359 for premium unleaded gasoline.
