PROVIDENCE – The price of gasoline in Rhode Island has fallen for the second consecutive week, AAA Southern New England reported Monday.
The August 23 survey by the auto club found the average price of self-serve, regular unleaded gas in the Ocean State to be $2.71 per gallon, down 4 cents from last week. By comparison, the state average was $2.68 per gallon a year ago.

Meanwhile, crude oil has continued to rebound from its lowest level in six weeks as speculation that takeovers will accelerate the price of U.S. stocks, Bloomberg News reported.
“The correlation is still strong with equities and it’s likely to remain so,” Roland Stenzel, a crude and carbon trader at E&T Energie Handelsgesellschaft mbH in Vienna, told Bloomberg. “The market continues to fluctuate.”
Crude oil for October delivery rose 51 cents to $74.33 a barrel as of 9:54 a.m. Monday on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The news service also reported that the September delivery contract, which expired last Friday, closed at $73.46, the lowest since July 6.
AAA found prices of self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline ranging from $2.57 to $2.90 a gallon in Rhode Island. The state average remains above the national average of $2.70 a gallon.
The auto club additionally reported average self-serve prices of $2.87 per gallon of midgrade unleaded, $2.99 per gallon of premium unleaded and $2.98 per gallon of diesel.
In Massachusetts, the average price of self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline remained unchanged from last week at $2.69 per gallon, 1 cent below the national average.
