PROVIDENCE – Lorraine Bracco, the actress who portrayed mobster Tony Soprano’s psychiatrist, Dr. Jennifer Melfi, on the HBO series “The Sopranos,” will be the keynote speaker at Butler Hospital’s Real Stories, Real Recoveries luncheon on April 24 at noon at The Westin Providence.
Bracco published a 2006 book, “On the Couch,” in which she spoke about her career, her marriages and motherhood, as well as about her struggle with depression and the treatment she received.
“When talented, successful people like Lorraine Bracco share their personal stories about their lives and their recovery from depression, it changes the way people think about mental illness and offers hope and inspiration to others,” said Dr. Patricia Ryan Recupero, president and CEO of Butler, in a news release. “Her humor and charisma bring a positive, hopeful spirit to the luncheon.”
Clinical depression is one of the most common mental illnesses, affecting more than 19 million Americans each year, and includes major depressive disorder, manic depression and dysthymia, a milder, longer-lasting form of depression. Depression causes people to lose pleasure from daily life, can complicate other medical conditions, and can interfere with their ability to function at home, school and work.
