Aldi is known for a laser-like focus on low costs that makes Wal-Mart look like Neiman Marcus.
“Its stores are small and spartan, with minimal décor and a limited selection of products,” The New York Times wrote two years ago. “They are often found in nondescript shopping strips and lack the flashy signs and window displays of some competitors. Grocery carts cost a quarter apiece, which is refundable after the cart is returned.”
The Germany-based supermarket chain was founded by billionaire brothers Karl and Theo Albrecht. (“Aldi” is short for “Albrecht Discount.”) Theo Albrecht also owns specialty grocer Trader Joe’s through a family trust.
