PROVIDENCE – Citizens Financial Group Inc. Chairwoman and CEO Ellen Alemany has received the Foreign Policy Association’s Corporate Social Responsibility award.
The association, a nonprofit that attempts to raise the public’s awareness of world issues, said the award is given to an individual or corporation that demonstrates corporate citizenship.
In presenting the award, the Foreign Policy Association commended Alemany for what it said was her effort to make community service and social responsibility a key part of the bank’s operations. Citizens Financial says its employees have volunteered more than 570,000 hours of their time to thousands of various charities and community organizations. In 2010, the company supported more than 2,000 nonprofit organizations.
“At a moment when the public view of the banking industry has been greatly diminished, Ellen exemplifies the good that bankers can do when they focus on the needs of their communities,” said Noel V. Lateef, president and CEO of the Foreign Policy Association.
Alemany received the award at the association’s annual dinner last week in New York.
“On behalf of my 21,000 Citizens Financial Group colleagues in the United States, I am honored by this special award,” said Alemany. “Good citizenship is embedded in our culture.”
Earlier this year, Alemany was elected to the board of trustees of the National Constitution Center, the independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit in Philadelphia chaired by former President Bill Clinton that is dedicated to increasing public understanding of the U.S. Constitution and the ideas and values it represents.
Previous recipients of the FPA Corporate Social Responsibility Award include Paul S. Otellini, president and CEO of Intel Corp. Paolo Scaroni, CEO at ENI; Brendan Dougher, managing partner of the New York metro region of PricewaterhouseCoopers; David M. Cote, chairman and CEO of Honeywell International; and John J. Conroy, chairman and CEO at Baker & McKenzie.
