Newport, RI, September, 2011…Last month, America’s Cup officials announced that the final climatic finish of the 2011-2012 AC World Series, where the first AC World Series champion will be crowned, is to be held in Newport (RI) in June of 2012. Details of that event will be unveiled during next week’s Newport International Boat Show at a News Conference featuring Tom Huston, Chief Operating Officer of the America’s Cup Event Authority, along with Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee and Keith Stokes, Executive Director of the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation. Jerry Kirby, renowned international racing sailor, will be the moderator and Brad Read, Executive Director of Sail Newport and a force in bringing major racing events to Newport, will offer comment.

The News Conference will present videos that demonstrate the new racing format featuring the physically demanding America’s Cup boats, the AC45 wing-sailed catamarans, which have been seen as electrifying onshore and broadcast crowds alike with their raw power and speed. A Question and Answer session will follow the News Conference that is scheduled to begin at 1:00 PM on Thursday, September 15, on North Commercial Wharf in Newport, alongside the in-water sailboat displays at the Newport Boat Show.
The America’s Cup World Series, a new professional circuit said to feature the best sailors in the fastest boats, started in Cascais, Portugal in August and will be sailing in Plymouth, England simultaneously with the Newport Show. Other stops include San Diego this coming November, Venice, Italy in May of next year and San Francisco, with the remaining calendar to be announced by the end of October. Teams from Sweden, China, New Zealand, Spain, Korea and France will compete alongside the current America’s Cup champion, US Team ORACLE Racing, all in identical AC45s.
According to Tom Huston of the Event Authority, “The America’s Cup has always been about innovation, and the new America’s Cup World Series gives us the opportunity to bring the highest levels of our sport to more people around the globe. From our LiveLine graphics and onboard cameras to seeing the athletes in action as well as the boats themselves, this next generation America’s Cup is transforming the way people experience sailing.”
“Through innovative race courses close to shore and broadcast systems that bring the viewer onto the boat, fans will see and hear the quick decisions being made, the athleticism of the sailors, the raw power of the boats – live in person, online or on television, — as the teams fly over the water at speeds over 35 mph.”, he continued. “In addition, there will be fan-festival activities on shore with bands, entertainment, parties and even simulated racing experiences that every fan can enjoy.”
Besides racing sailboats and news of the America’s Cup, the Newport International Boat Show is the place to see the largest selection of boats in the Northeast —both power and sail– plus boating products and services. The show, traditionally the first show of the season, runs this year from September 15th – 18th. Show hours are Thursday to Saturday 10 AM to 6 PM and Sunday 10 AM to 5 PM. Tickets purchased at the show on Thursday, VIP Day, are $27.00 ($24 on-line plus processing fee). On Friday, Saturday or Sunday the tickets are $18.00 ($15 on-line plus processing fee). And, new this year, a second day is available at the Show for just $3.00!
