Amgen wins award for conservation program

WEST GREENWICH – Amgen Inc. was honored May 9 for its resource-conservation program at the Environment Council of Rhode Island’s ninth annual Sen. John H. Chafee Conservation Leadership Awards.
The pharmaceutical company received the “Outstanding Award” for its conservation program, which reduced water use by 150,000 gallons a day at Amgen’s West Greenwich facility, and electrical consumption by 2.2 million kilowatt hours per year last year.
At the same time, Amgen boosted its recycling rate to more than half of its refuse.
Other winners of the Environment Council’s annual awards included the Little Compton Agricultural Conservancy Trust; Fidelity Investments Wildlife at Work Program and Scituate High School Community Energy Project.
Zechariah Chafee, assistant U.S. attorney for Rhode Island and son of the late environmental leader Sen. John Chafee, handed out the awards, and U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse was the keynote speaker. &#8226
