PBN INNOVATIVE COMPANIES 2020 BIOTECHNOLOGY & LIFE SCIENCES (LARGE COMPANY)
Amgen Inc.
IN THE PROCESS of building the United States’ first next-generation biomanufacturing production plant in West Greenwich, biotechnology company Amgen Inc. sought to innovate both in how long the plant was built and how much it would cost to operate.
“It’s a much smaller footprint that can enable the same output as a larger facility could, and so that’s one of the greatest contributions,” Amgen Site Vice President of Productions Brian Britson said about the project.
Plant Manager Rohan Persaud said the project was built in a modular design basis. Some equipment was built at a company located in Shanghai, China. “Once it was built, it was shipped here and then we coupled the site construction work with a modular build,” he said. This reduced overall time and costs for construction.
Britson said the plant will be a multi-product facility, producing various products that come through Amgen’s pipeline.
“The goal is to be able to handle anything that comes in, whatever mode of development,” Britson said. “We have multiple different product platforms, and so we want to have the ability to manufacture products. So, this gives us that diversity here in Rhode Island to handle a wide scant of products that come down the project pipeline.”
With the COVID-19 pandemic affecting every company, Persaud said they must work closely with construction personnel and others at Amgen to ensure proper protocols are followed. “We check people’s temperatures before they come on the work site, and we just continue reinforcing every day the importance of social distancing,” Britson said. The company also spread activities out in phases.
“It was absolutely a challenge, but with the right focus, we got through this,” Briston said.
Britson said in general, Amgen has been evaluating what work could be accomplished remotely and that the company had “found its stride” in continuing to deliver on commitments.
