Barron’s: Bill may boost Alexion, Amgen

SMITHFIELD – Alexion Pharmaceuticals Inc. and Amgen Inc., both of which have manufacturing facilities in Rhode Island, stand to gain from the health care reform bill passed by the Senate last month, according to Barron’s Magazine.

“If you really want to feel healthy, wealthy and wise in the new year, then forget about resveratrol and coffee and other sure-fire folk remedies and instead spend your money on health care and banking stocks,” Jim McTague, the influential investment journal’s Washington editor, writes in the current edition. “Health insurance and financial regulatory reform bills moving through Congress may be creating big investment opportunities.”

David Song, an equity analyst at the investment management firm Rockefeller & Co., told McTague that a number of provisions in the Senate bill will benefit medical companies, including expanded insurance coverage and the continuation of the fee-for-service model.

Amgen and Alexion would benefit because the Senate bills gives them marketing exclusivity of five years for “small-molecule” drugs and 12 years for biologic drugs, Song said.
