PROFESSIONAL BUSINESS SERVICES provider CBIZ Inc. takes employee well-being seriously. The company’s wellness program seeks to cover all team members’ needs physically, financially and socially, whether it’s in the office or out in the community.

CBIZ believes in the principle that people achieve balance when they focus in on five key areas – purpose (or career), social well-being, financial well-being, community well-being and physical well-being. This approach garnered the attention of a large number of employees. More than 80% of them participate in a company-sponsored benefit program of some form.

“We are proud to advocate a well-being philosophy at CBIZ,” said Deborah Sherman, director of compensation and benefits. “All of our programs, tools and resources are developed, and categorized according to these pillars. We want our associates to be healthy, happy and successful, and we understand that achieving overall well-being is the only way to achieve those goals.”

Sherman said CBIZ, which has a Providence office, promotes its benefits-plan platform by providing simple-to-read plan information. It also keeps premiums at competitive levels by offering multiple plans to meet various needs of employees and their families, and introduces plans new to the market.

Through the physical well-being pillar, CBIZ sponsors programs featuring the tools and resources to assist its employees and their spouse/domestic partner to take immediate action on achieving good health. In addition to a host of medical and drug benefits, offerings include Rally Health, a UnitedHealthcare of New England Inc. website where the company’s personal scorecard, health risk assessment, biometric screenings and premium discounts can be found.

“As always, each of these tools is designed to focus attention on maintaining or improving physical health,” Sherman said.

Under the CBIZ social pillar, employees enjoy the “Great People, Great Place” team-building and interactive activities. Among them are playing softball, having employee-appreciation events and parties, and summer picnics. The benefits also include parental leave, holiday pay, ample vacation time and flexible work options.

The community pillar, the sense of engagement and involvement one has with the area where one lives, features the company’s CBIZ Cares program, in which employees are given paid time off to volunteer in their local communities.

“Nationally we have an annual food drive with interoffice competitions, having collected 8.7 million pounds of food in 10 years for local pantries,” Sherman said. “We partner with our CBIZ Women’s Advantage program to host Dress for Success drives to provide business attire for those less-fortunate females who are trying to enter the workplace. Our offices also sponsor activities such as blood drives, casual days to raise money for local charities and/or United Way campaigns to help their communities.”

Last year, to help provide better balance for families, the company unveiled the CBIZ Parent Program, which offers support and assistance to new and existing mothers and fathers as they prepare for a new child. The program also helps prospective parents manage any challenges that may occur while coming back to work after an extended leave.

“Parents returning to work are often dealing with significant adjustments,” Sherman said, “physical changes, exhaustion due to the new responsibilities and schedule, guilt or sadness at leaving the children, and other physical and mental adaptations after having been on leave. Our goal is that this program will have a positive impact as parents navigate through this exciting time in their lives.”

‘When program materials are specific to the employee’s immediate need, we capture attention and achieve engagement.’

In response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, CBIZ introduced several new policies, programs and procedures aimed at keeping employees safe. The new initiatives range from virtual medical visits to COVID-19 pay for those unable to work to remote working guidelines and support. An online resource library, email blasts and feedback surveys are also utilized to keep communication open.

In the past year, CBIZ has also introduced new programs to help employees remain financially stable. Among them are True Connect, enabling employees to take an individual loan of up to $3,000 for a 12-month period, and IonTuition, a student loan repayment benefit that helps employees manage their student loans.
