BirdBrain joins RevUp by Betaspring portfolio

PROVIDENCE – RevUp by Betaspring this month announced it has accepted BirdBrain Technologies into its portfolio.

BirdBrain, based in Pittsburgh, was founded by Tom Lauwers, who attended graduate school at Carnegie Mellon’s Robotics Institute. The technology company aims at getting younger students more engaged in computer science by providing tools for them to build robots.

“Aside from being fun, robotics is ideal for teaching STEM [science, technology, engineering, math] skills because it combines engineering, programming and design, all while enabling students to take a hands-on, maker-based approach to learning,” RevUp wrote on its blog.

BirdBrain products are currently in more than 5,000 schools in more than 40 countries, according to the company. RevUp, a Providence-based organization that helps scale up revenue-generating companies, is optimistic about the company’s future.

“Despite the progress, this is just the tip of the iceberg for the fast-growing Pittsburgh-based team, which is bullish on their mission to bring robotics to all students, everywhere,” RevUp wrote. “We are thrilled to be working with the BirdBrain team on their next phase of growth and excited to be a part of the robot revolution.”
