Blue Cross offers flood relief

PROVIDENCE – Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island is taking steps to help members and nonmembers who have been affected by the recent flooding, the company announced last week.
For members who have lost or damaged prescription medication, the insurer will allow replacements, only requiring the usual co-payment (normally, health plans only pay for your monthly supply once). Blue Cross has also put a system in place to enable pharmacies to refill orders without delay, and is urging members to call customer service if they have problems.
In addition, Blue Cross donated $10,000 to the United Way of Rhode Island’s Flood Recovery Fund and $10,000 to the American Red Cross.
“Whether you are an employee of BCBSRI, a BCBSRI member or a member of the greater Rhode Island community, you should know that BCBSRI cares deeply about your loss,” said James E. Purcell, president and CEO, in a statement.
“As one of the leaders of the Rhode Island business community,” he added, “we offer our assistance to you in your time of need, and we will work with our members to ease the pain suffered by flood damage to property. As the clean-up continues, we want our members to know that BCBSRI will work with them on an individual basis to solve health insurance issues so they focus on other recovery matters.”
