PROVIDENCE – Following the announcement that Nordstrom will leave the Providence Place mall Tuesday, Brookfield Property Partners LP, which recently acquired GGP Inc., announced the opening retail space will be occupied by Boscov’s, a family-owned department store headquartered in Pennsylvania.

Boscov’s operates more than 45 department stores, primarily in Pennsylvania, but also in New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Delaware, Connecticut and Maryland. In 2018, Forbes named the company the No. 34 best employer in the United States. It was reported to have 5,800 employees.

The store’s offerings run the gamut from clothing to jewelry, furniture, home goods and beauty products.

Company officials have said that Boscov’s had revenue of $1.2 billion in 2017, a record sales figure for the company and a turnaround from its bankruptcy in 2008 following the stock market crash. It also is reported to be opening a slate of new stores in 2018.

(In comparison, Nordstrom reported fiscal 2017 sales of $15.1 billion, including Nordstrom Rack.)

A representative from Brookfield said that Boscov’s will conduct a full remodel of the 197,000-square-foot retail space before it opens.
