Boston’s CPI-U increases 3.4% in July

BOSTON – The Boston-Brockton-Nashua area’s Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers increased 3.4 percent in July from a year earlier, according to nonseasonally adjusted data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Thursday.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics does not publish data on Rhode Island. The Boston index – which includes New Bedford – is the most relevant data available.

The Northeast CPI increased 3.6 percent year-over-year, matching the U.S. city average increase.

Under the food and beverages category, the Boston area CPI grew 3.8 percent; housing increased 2.2 percent; fuels and utilities, 10.1 percent; apparel, 3.2 percent; transportation, 13.5 percent; medical care, 1.9 percent.

Other categories included: recreation, down 5.8 percent from a year earlier while education and communication ticked up 0.3 percent; other goods and services added 1.7 percent; as energy soared 23.6 percent.

The Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers increased 3.9 percent in July from a year earlier; in the Northeast it increased 4.0 percent and the U.S. city average added 4.1 percent.
