SMITHFIELD – Bryant University hosted the seventh annual Research and Engagement Day on April 18, a daylong symposium. This year’s event, titled “RED18,” put college creativity, accomplishments and experiences on display. The keynote speaker was Rebecca Nugent of Carnegie Mellon University Department of Statistics and Data Science.
Nugent serves on the National Academy of Sciences Committee for the project “Envisioning the Data Science Discipline: The Undergraduate Perspective,” and is a force in growing Carnegie Mellon’s undergraduate statistics program, according to a university press release.

As addressed in a TEDxCMU Talk last year, Nugent calls data science “the people’s science,” promoting its ability to empower students and employees in diverse areas, including the humanities and social sciences.
Classes were cancelled so students and faculty could attend the symposium, which included research-paper presentations, poster presentations, roundtable discussions and Bryant’s first 3-D Printing Challenge. More than 600 people attended.
