Chafee names chair, 9 others to Board of Governors for Higher Education

PROVIDENCE – Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee announced on Wednesday 10 appointments to the Board of Governors for Higher Education and Lorne A. Adrain as chair; one member will retain his position until 2012.
“Over the last several years, funding for Rhode Island’s public institutions of higher education has not only lagged behind other states, but has actually been reduced dramatically,” Chafee said in a news release.
“Given this cycle, a dynamic approach is needed, and I have full faith that […] these new appointees will support me in my efforts to develop the strategies and programs necessary to bring significant improvement to our higher education system.”
A previous member, Thomas Rockett, whose term expires in 2012, will retain his position.
The appointees include lawyers: Amy Beretta, Eva-Marie Mancuso, William C. Maaia and Joseph B. White; Antonio Barajas, a physician at Roger Williams Medical Center; John A. Walsh, a high school teacher. Also on the board are: Jane B. Sherman, previous staff member of Providence Plan; Michael M. Tikoian, accountant; and Joan C. Abrams, program director for Simmons College’s Master’s in Communication Management.
Chairman Adrain, is a managing director of wealth management firm Ballentine Partners and co-founder of Social Venture Partners.
