Chafee, Taveras join NBC education summit

PROVIDENCE – Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee and Mayor Angel Taveras participated in panel discussions that were part of the recent 2011 NBC News Education Nation Summit, a weeklong event held in New York City.
Chafee on Sept. 26 took part in a televised segment entitled The State of Education: The Governors’ Perspective, moderated by NBC’s Brian Williams and featuring governors from such other states as Georgia, Arkansas, Wisconsin, Colorado and Maine.
Taveras on Sept. 27 was a panelist for the televised discussion Going Local: What A City Can Do For Its Schools, moderated by NBC’s Lester Holt. Others on the panel were Newark City Mayor Cory Booker, Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry and National School Boards Association President Mary Broderick.
Presenters at the education summit included New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen, Harlem Children’s Zone President and CEO Geoffrey Canada, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. •
