Citizens falls in national rankings

PROVIDENCE – Citizens Financial Group has fallen two spots to No. 13 in a ranking of the nation’s largest banks by total assets, based on second-quarter data.
Released by financial information firm SNL Financial, the ranking shows that Providence-based CFG – which reported total assets of $153.3 billion and total deposits of $99.7 billion as of June 30 – was bypassed by BB&T Corp., based in Winston-Salem, N.C., and State Street Corp., in Boston. BB&T jumped from 12th to 10th with total assets of $174.2 billion and total deposits of $122.2 billion. State Street Corp. climbed one spot to edge out Citizens at 12th with total assets of $153.4 billion and total deposits of $85.6 billion.
Charlotte, N.C.-based Bank of America Corp. remained first in the country by total assets by reporting $2.25 trillion in assets and $970.7 billion in deposits. JP Morgan Chase & Co. and Citigroup Inc. rounded out the top three. Morgan Chase had $2.03 trillion in assets and $866.5 billion in deposits, and Citigroup had $1.85 trillion in asset and $804.7 billion in deposits.
Another player in the Rhode Island banking scene, Sovereign Bank, which has been acquired by Spanish bank Banco Santander S.A., edged up one spot on the SNL list to No. 20 with $75.1 billion in assets and $49 billion in deposits.
And regional bank Webster Financial Corp., based in Waterbury, Conn., which wasn’t on the top-50 list in the first quarter, made an appearance at the 50th spot.
Webster, which is expanding its presence in Rhode Island as it extends its footprint toward Boston, posted $17.5 billion in total assets and $13.2 billion in total deposits.
