Citizens hires new chief accounting officer

PROVIDENCE – Citizens Financial Group Inc. has appointed a new chief accounting officer and corporate controller replacing Jack Read, who resigned on Aug. 7 to pursue a career outside the banking sector.

Christopher Schnirel will start the job on Oct. 21.

Schnirel was most recently senior vice president and assistant controller at Columbus, Ohio-based Huntington Bancshares Inc., where he led Securities and Exchange Commission reporting, regulatory reporting, accounting policy, treasury controllership and capital markets controllership, Citizens said.

Huntington Bancshares had $189.37 billion in assets as of 2023 and is the holding company for the Huntington National Bank. By comparison, Citizens had $1.997 billion in assets as of 2023.

Woods had been tapped to fill in when Read stepped down.

Before joining Huntington, Schnirel held senior accounting positions with HSBC North America. He began his career at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, Citizens said.
