Colombian immigrant wins law scholarship

Adler Pollock & Sheehan PC has awarded its first $10,000 Diversity Scholarship to Vladimir Ibarra, a Colombian immigrant who is now enrolled as a first-year law student at Roger Williams University School of Law.

The scholarship, which the firm has pledged to award annually, is designed to help a minority student to attend law school and successfully enter the practice of law. The applicant’s financial needs and his or her desire to work and reside in Rhode Island or Massachusetts upon graduation are both contributing factors in the selection.

Ibarra immigrated with his mother when he was 14, quickly learned English, completed high school, became a U.S. citizen, and enrolled at the Community College of Rhode Island and then Roger Williams University. He graduated with a B.S. in criminal justice and social and health services and was named to the dean’s list at both schools.

For the past four years, he has served as community affairs and constituent services director in the lieutenant governor’s office and worked as supervisor of the Small Business Advocacy Council. •
