PROVIDENCE – The CVS Caremark Charitable Trust has awarded a two-year, $400,000 grant to Women & Infants Hospital to expand the neonatal intensive-care unit’s follow-up program, which helps parents and pediatricians caring for special-needs children at home.
The 30-year-old program provides home visits, support for primary care providers and other assistance after a NICU stay, aiming to reduce the likelihood of re-hospitalization and the emotional and financial burdens of caring for the children. Clinicians also follow the infants’ development and help families connect with community resources as needed.

“With this generous grant, CVS Caremark Charitable Trust has taken the lead in an important initiative to improve the outcomes of infants who have very special health care needs,” said Constance A. Howes, president and CEO of the hospital.
“Helping Women & Infants provide a seamless continuum of care for these infants once they are discharged to their homes,” she added, “will substantially increase their knowledge of the babies’ treatment plans, ensuring the healthiest and happiest lives possible for these special children and their families.” •
