WOONSOCKET – Modern Healthcare magazine has named Dr. Troyen Brennan, chief medical officer of CVS Health Corp., among the country’s top 50 most influential physician executives and leaders of 2017.
Brennan ranked at No. 32 on the 2017 list, up five spots from his place at No. 37 in last year’s ranking. Modern Healthcare cited Brennan’s role in developing CVS Health’s clinical and medical affairs and health care strategy, as well as his oversight of the company’s MinuteClinic service.

Brennan was among the CVS executives who implemented the company’s decision to end tobacco sales in its retail stores in 2014, saying the sale of tobacco “conflicted with our purpose of helping people on their path to better health.”
He also helped launch CVS Health’s “Be The First” campaign in December 2016 to combat tobacco use among youth and young adults, with a goal to achieve a 3 percent decline in the national youth smoking rate.
Previously, Brennan served as the chief medical officer of Aetna Inc. insurance company and president and CEO of the Brigham and Women’s Physicians Organization in Boston. He holds a medical degree from the Yale University School of Medicine as well as a law degree from Yale Law School.
Recognized No. 19 on Modern Healthcare’s list was Dr. Prem Reddy, chairman and CEO of Ontario, Calif.-based Prime Healthcare Services, which operates Landmark Medical Center in Woonsocket and The Rehabilitation Hospital of Rhode Island in North Smithfield.
In April, the Prime Healthcare Foundation entered discussions with Care New England Health System about acquiring Memorial Hospital in Pawtucket following CNE’s announcement of a merger with Partners HealthCare of Massachusetts.
Reddy dropped four spots in the 2017 ranking, from No. 15 in 2016.
The Boston-based Partners also appeared on Modern Healthcare list, with President and CEO Dr. David Torchiana ranking at No. 43 compared with No. 7 last year.
Dr. Richard Migliori, executive vice president of medical affairs and chief medical officer of UnitedHealth Group Inc., also fell significantly on this year’s list to No. 39, down from a top spot at No. 6 in 2016’s ranking.
Dr. Tom Price, secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, was named Modern Healthcare’s top-ranked health care leader of 2017. Dr. John Noseworthy, president and CEO of Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., ranked second, followed by Dr. David Feinberg, president and CEO of Geisinger Health System of Danville, Penn., at third.
